PaintBoard: Prototyping Interactive Character Behaviours by Digitally Painting Storyboards

چکیده
The creation of interactive worlds, such as those in video games, often include a set of computer controlled characters that must intelligently act and react in response to dynamic input from the user. These interactive behaviours usually require authors to programmatically define each behavior, reaction, and interaction the character should take in response to user input across a range of scenarios, a process that can take significant time. While this method can successfully create robust characters, the large development overhead is not conducive to the exploration, prototyping, and testing of new character ideas. We designed and developed PaintBoard, a system that enables users to rapidly prototype interactive character movement by digitally painting a storyboard. PaintBoard promotes prototyping by facilitating quick, visual authoring, and by enabling immediate testing by allowing the user to interact in real-time with a behaviour generated from a painted storyboard. To generate the interactive behavior, we developed a novel algorithm that analyzes a painted storyboard and uses machine-learning to generalize the painted examples to new situations. Parameter Spaces, Spacetime Control and Motion Graphs for Automating the Animation of Videogame Characters
Character animations are a crucial part of many interactive applications, from training simulations to videogames. As these applications have become more sophisticated, the growing number of character animations required has made standard animation techniques like key-framing and motion-capture increasingly expensive and time-consuming. Procedurally generating animations appears to offer a solu...

Touch-based interaction is increasingly a key feature of digital learning environments, yet we know little about the specific ways in which digitally mediated touch reshapes interaction for very young children. This paper examines how finger painting processes, a common activity in early years learning environments, might change in digital (iPad) versus physical (paper) learning environments. I...
متن کاملCANVAS: computer-assisted narrative animation synthesis
Despite the maturity in solutions for animating expressive virtual characters, innovations realizing the creative intent of story writers have yet to make the same strides. The key challenge is to provide an accessible, yet expressive interface for story authoring that enables the rapid prototyping, iteration, and deployment of narrative concepts. We present CANVAS, a computerassisted visual au...

— This paper reviews an experimental opera production, where digitally augmented content was used interactively during the performance. Projected graphics and spatialized sounds were designed to support the story. The animated 3D graphics acted as virtual stage, narrative element, or reflection of thoughts of a character. The special effects were partly un...

Atlanta, GA, USA Abstract Storyboarding is a low-fidelity prototyping technique with large acceptance among User-Centered Design (UCD) adopters. We argue that interaction design could benefit from a model of interaction bound to interface sketches commonly used at storyboards. In our proposal, the d...
